MORE THAN A "KEYNOTE SPEECH" IT'S A TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPERIENCE

It's no secret that Independent school students face intense pressures and expectations that can lead to fear and self-doubt.

I help students discover the positive side of fear and develop practical tools to conquer it. Let's build a community where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to grow and succeed!

I fear I won’t get into the college of my choice and be a disappointment

I fear that I won't be accepted for my true goals and aspirations and that I won't be able to use my voice because I'm scared of what others will think.

I fear that I won’t reach the level of success I hope that i will - that will let myself down

I fear I’m not good enough compared to my peers

I fear that I will fail to meet the expectations of my mentors (Parents, Teachers) and myself

I fear that things to do will outpace my ability to keep up, leaving me always one step behind. "And yet, for the Lord's great mercy we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

Hey, nice to meet you!

Involved student turned fearful movement leader

Darryl Bellamy Jr.

Looking back at my first Independent school speaking engagement, I chuckle at how little I knew about their unique challenges.

Five years later, I've had the honor of speaking to thousands of students like yours, from lower to upper, east to west, listening to their challenges and guiding them on their journey to becoming better humans who foster inclusive communities.

My message is one of support and guidance, letting students know they're not alone and that they can overcome any obstacle by embracing their mistakes and having those tough conversations.

I'm excited to work with your community and create a lasting impact!

Students ATTENTION

His visit instantly captured our students' attention and held it...It has been a month since his visit and our students are still talking about it. I would absolutely have him come again.

CUSTOMIZED talk

YES! Absolutely do it. He is AWESOME. Our students LOVED him, and he was great for our community in naming fear and connecting that back to our overall objectives. He has been a pleasure!
Raquel Majeski
Assistant Head of School for Equity and Community Life

CONNECTS with them

He’s not a “one and done,” but, rather, engages before, during, and even after the presentation. While on campus, many students would “high five” and take pictures with him, as well as exchange information to follow him afterward. It was a meaningful way to kick off the school year!

ENGAGES community

He led three student sessions across our lower, middle, and upper school divisions, and his energy and deep insight kept our students thoroughly engaged from beginning to end! But it didn't stop with our students! Faculty, staff, administrators, and parents sung Darryl's praises via calls, emails, and text messages even after he left.

well, we do too!

Writing my own book!

In 2010 I was diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder. I was always in the hospital and was bullied to the point where I almost committed suicide twice. I was admitted to the hospital, but I felt like giving up because I was in so much pain. I recently had a chemo treatment, and it worked. I have been kidney disorder free for 9 months! You talking about being fearless inspired me to write my own book or write a play based on my pain and hurt and tell it in a positive light.

Honest with parents

I finally decided to tell my parents about my bad grades. I thought they were going to get very mad at me, but they said it was ok and they started helping me with my homework. My grades have gone up a lot. Your speech caused me to tell them. Thank you!

Fearless through failure

A fearless moment of mine is when I competed in the Senior Concerto competition. I feared that I wasn't going to win, and I really wanted to win. But in the end, during the competition, I gave my best and played my music. I didn't win in the end, and my fear came true, but in the end, I think it has made me a stronger musician who can accept failure a bit better now.

I ran for office

"Last week I learned a lot, and it helped me get the courage to run for Academic Chair of my fraternity and give a speech in front of everyone. It was not easy getting up there, and I ended up losing by two votes. Reminded me of your situation and I was able to keep a positive attitude afterward."

Hard Conversations

I acted out of my comfort zone and had a hard conversation. I told all of my best friends about what I was feeling inside and they understood and even related to me. It felt SO GOOD!

Real success from students like yours

I asked for help

I was able to share all my worries and things that weighed on me the most with my friends. Worries that I had never shared before. I was always so scared that people would not want to stay and listen to me, but when my friends sat next to me and I needed to talk, I was able to be vulnerable and trust them. I had never let myself do that before. I pushed myself to ask for help.
-Grade 12

Value of failure

I had. a fearless moment when I competed in the Deerfield Senior Concerto competition. I feared that I wasn't going to win, and I really wanted to win. But in the end, during the competition, I gave my best and played my music. I didn't win in the end, and my fear came true, but in the end, I think it has made me a stronger musician who can accept failure a bit better now.

I can learn quickly

My fearless moment was when I tried out for a solo in chorus. when I was singing in the open, ALONE I looked at my Fearless Band and it made me feel a lot better about myself :)!! But Sadly, someone BROKE MY BAND WHILE I was playing football :( !! so I threw it away I'm so thankful for your time at the _____.
-Middle School

Self Advocate

There are a lot of times at ____ when I feel afraid. Today made me realize how much of a people’s pleaser I am and that it is important to hold myself to the same standards that I hold others to. I am the only person that can advocate for myself. So I put my learning first and emailed a teacher about meeting to go over some work. This is a hard discussion for me to have because I hate talking about grades. Normally I would have pushed this thing under the rug, but if I can't talk to this teacher, how am I supposed to make it in the medical field.

Real success from real students

Taking back control

I was in my dorm over the weekend and I’m having a problem leaving my current two friends. I always am pumping myself up after an incident happens where they make me feel less and I say “I can do this, today is the day I move on and take control of who I am.”...What is so special about this moment is that today I was able to resist my temptation of going to what I know and hanging out with them. It was a step in the right direction

Uncovered a part of myself

I lost my father to suicide three years ago, and since then, I have struggled with depression and anxiety. A passion of mine has always been the theatre, and performing before my father's passing was so much easier than it is now with my struggle with anxiety. I have concealed this part of who I am ever since my father passed. I signed up for an Acting course and have uncovered a part of myself that I never thought I would see again,

Fearless throught recovery

I am in recovery from an eating disorder, and each day I choose life and perseverance to stay in recovery. I hope to someday wake up free from these destructive thoughts and habits, I am fearless for jumping into the uncertain path of recovery and working incredibly hard each day to keep myself on track and continue living a life I had never dreamed of for myself a year ago.
